What makes Polish design stand out? What are its latest trends? What does ‘must have’ actually mean? The Łódź Design Festival has announced the results of the 2018 must havecontest. 70 designs, including furniture, carpets, jewellery and ceramics, have made it to the final.

Must have is sometimes called the ‘Polish Red Dot’. It is one of Poland’s most important design events. The 2018 competition is the eighth in the history of the festival. It is a distinction for designers and producers who represent Poland’s avant-garde.

Objects of significant value for modern handicraft have been awarded this year; among them artisan chests of drawers, tables, ceramic dishes, wall carpets and jewellery. As usual, the list included a great deal of furniture, lighting and glass objects. Polish illustrators and graphic artists working with techniques such as collage, screen printing or linocut have received awards, and so have artists using 3D printing. The jury has also selected several interesting designs for children: books, building blocks, toy figurines and an educational robot.

400 designs have been assessed. 230 were submitted directly by designers and producers, and 170 were nominated by members of the Board of Experts. So far, nearly 600 objects have been awarded in must havecontests.

Each year, the Board of Experts examines the Polish market in search of the most interesting and best designed objects. They judge innovation, functionality, aesthetics, sustainability, quality and the ratio between quality and price.

“This year's must havecontest reflects the changes in Polish design. After a period when demand was simply for good and functional objects, the time has come for more conscious design. An increasing number of companies are working with designers on a long-term basis, and they are eager to share this experience. Designers themselves are displaying a strong tendency towards slow design, which is manifested by returning to the roots, celebrating handicraft and creating objects that are both functional and unique. Customers are beginning to favour items of timeless value over the world of excessive and easily available products. We tried to express these sentiments by showing the most interesting objects on the Polish market and by awarding them the 2018 must havedistinction,” says Olga Łosiak, coordinator of the Łódź Design Festival must havecontest.

The Łódź Design Festival stands for ideas, people and action. It started in 2007 to showcase the achievements of Polish design. From its very beginning, the festival has been presenting design from various perspectives, spanning industrial design, graphics, architecture, handicraft and the creation of services and interactions. It is a place to meet and look for inspiration. It presents innovations and designs that have a great influence on the world around us. So far it has attracted 400 000 visitors from all over the world.
